Little Miss Gliss: The Nursery

Decorating a welcome home spot for Little Miss Gliss has been a lot of fun.  My vision was mint, grey and pops of gold and coral and elephants!  It is very different that what I had originally imagined but there are so many thoughtful gifts and meaningful things that have made it so special.  The little details like my own first pair of shoes (a gift my mom held on to for me), a famous Porsche piggy bank, and a homemade blanket gifted to me from my maid of honor of my wedding and featuring actual pieces of fabric from my wedding dress. The love from family and friends will be all around our baby girl as she sleeps peacefully for 8 hours a night ;-)  We can't thank family and friends enough!!

Now we are just waiting on you baby girl!

The Future of Ashley Amber Photo… What to Expect

You may have noticed things got quiet earlier this year.   Frequent followers of our social media already know that Ed and I are expecting our first child, a sweet little daughter due this August.  We are over the moon excited and have tried our best to slow down our busy schedules to really enjoy and experience everything about pregnancy, parenthood and growing our little family.  That worked…. For the most part.  I spent most of the first 3 months not feeling great and then just in time for some crazy travel schedules I started to feel great again.  We had two trips to New York, a trip to Massachusetts and I had a trip to Germany in the mix.  So we’ve been busy in different ways this year and it has been wonderful!

So you may be asking, as many people ask me, what will you do with your photography?  Will you quit your day job and stay home doing photography?  Will you close your business?  Here’s what you can expect.

Ashley Amber Photo will not completely shut its doors.  What you can expect is for us to become something new as our family grows.  We will be a little more personal over on our blog, sharing our life and parenthood; we will spend more time photographing new milestones for families, newborns and seniors; we will shoot only a handful of weddings for the next few years as our weekend time together with our daughter will be so precious.  Both of us will be working our current day jobs and so Ashley Amber Photo will become even more focused on the moments when we are all not at our desks, moments when we are together as families, celebrating new life and new ventures because now more than ever we will see how fast these moments go by.

Before you see this change we will be pausing for maternity leave.  E-mail responses will be slower, our posts of baby girl on instagram will likely skyrocket and we won’t be accepting any photoshoots from July 15 to October 15 except under very special circumstances.  You can expect an e-mail for fall mini sessions and some personal blog posts in the mix but only if this little miss is a good sleeper ;-).  But when we return we plan to continue our trend of giving you the best personal experience that you’ve come to know with Ashley Amber Photo.  So please, reach out, say hi, bookmark our blog and follow our story.

Thank you to all of my clients who have made Ashley Amber Photo something we can’t let go of.  We can’t wait to capture your next moment together.

Dear Husband, on your birthday

To my dearest HUSBAND (still love calling you that), on your birthday. Well, we said this year was going to be crazy.  We were right.  I can't even describe to you in words how thankful I am to have you in my life.  What we accomplish together is more than I could ever dream alone.  You have never turned down any of my dreams and always stretch yourself a little further to make my dreams come true.

Let's talk about the last month.... a few years ago I talked about starting a photography business.  It was a small idea, we had the camera, we had the ideas and now several years later we have seen one of our guest rooms completely transformed into a fully operating business and a month like no other month we've ever had.  In the past 35 days we have taken... drum roll please..... 12478 pictures.  Yes, you saw that correctly.  You have stopped everything you're doing 2 hours before sunset every weekend since the beginning of October to come and stand by my side while I live my dream.  I can't thank you enough for your encouragement, help and outpouring of love.

zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3800_blog Now as you turn 26 I hope you can sit and reflect on how much you have accomplished for someone your age.  You've learned how to build shelves, walkways, grow a lawn, fix a lawn mower, make macaroni and cheese, drive cars sideways and so much more.  Over our 6 year years together is crazy to think of how much has happened, but this year you became my husband and remain my lifelong best friend.  This year will forever stay in our minds as it shaped us and our future.  Our wedding day was a complete dream come true because of how we centered everything around us and the ones we love and our honeymoon taught us we CAN relax.  20140524-524-fundy-270_blog (PS- these lovely photos came from the lovely Ms. Alexandra Meseke Photography ) 140524_AE_WED_1457_blogSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I hope that you  have a wonderful birthday!  Thank you so much for being you, I love you to the moon and back!

Workshop: Zach & Jody In-Camera Weekend

What did you do this weekend?  Well let me just tell you!  I dined, went to a factory and photographed the rolling hills of Tennessee with Zach & Jody Gray at their IN-CAMERA workshop.  For those of you who know me well you know I'm always curiously trying to learn something new whether it be cooking, fitness, or photography.  Zach and Jody are some of the best in the wedding photography industry and have transformed their lives and opened their home to over a thousand photographers to share all of their systems and secrets.  This weekend I headed out to their gorgeous home in Franklin, TN and attended a three day workshop consisting of Natural Light, Off-Camera Flash and super awesome Business Running Without Going Crazy Tricks.  Ok, so maybe that means nothing to the non-photographer geeks out there, but just scroll down and you'll see, I learned A LOT. zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-4006_blog.jpg

Some of the things I really took away are really focusing on my purpose, I work with couples on the biggest day of their life so far, and I am so so lucky to get to work right beside my husband while doing it.  I hope that WE as a couple are an inspiration to the couples we work with to cherish your friendship and eachother.  I absolutely love photographing couples who walk hand in hand in life beside their best friend and this workshop helped me realize just how exciting the future can be.

A quick word about some of the details of the workshop.  First, Zach and Jody, thank you for opening your home, hearts and minds to all of us crazy workshop attendees.  It was amazing to sit by your side, have lunch together and talk about how to make us better at being us.  I also appreciate your focus on balance and on each other, Jody is like the most patient person I've ever met and her and Zach balance each other so well, I mean, we had 35 people in their living room and their super adorable 1 year old in the house, how do they seriously pull that off?

Second, both shooting days  were such a great experience, learning how to approach everything as a system made me confident and I found myself almost instantly focusing more on the couple, the surroundings and new ideas.  There are a million different ways to take a picture and several steps to get set-up to capture what you vision, making that into a system allowed me to focus in on moments and being creative and not just light, exposure or posing.  By the end of the two days, everything felt so natural and I am absolutely PUMPED for my engagement session tonight where I can run free with all I've learned.

So to all my couples out there, yup, got a few tricks up my sleeve (and about a million new gizmos to buy) and to my fellow photographers, there is a lot of overwhelming information out there on how to do what we do, I highly recommend a workshop with Zach & Jody to not only learn how to do what you do but really learn how you can be who you really are while doing it!  Everyone wins.  Leave some comments below and check out these stellar two days of photos!!

Day 1 & 2 we had the same gorgeous models, these two are an already married couple (still so adorable, ah!) and Elly totally rocks some stellar heels and a wedding dress for two days straight.  I discovered that you CAN'T take a bad photo of her, she totally knows how to rock the camera. zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3380_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3348_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3379_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3371_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3595_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3647_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3650_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3800_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3678_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3820_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3822_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3906_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-3995_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-4006_blog.jpg zach-jody-gray-workshop-in-camera-wedding-4022_blog.jpg

Sunday Series: It's the San Francisco Treat

An Amazing trip to California back in May... wait, yes, May...OK After getting engaged life got... hectic... in a most excellent way of course but wedding planning, lots of photoshoots, work! So I'm getting back to my Sunday Series and I'm kicking it off with a trip we took to San Francisco!  I had some work out in California and Ed joined me for a weekend in San Francisco , CA followed by a drive down the coast to Monterey!  It was heaven!  Check it out below!

We stayed in the coolest boutique hotel right on the trolley line... it was a bit unique to say the least but their decor was so fun!

We wandered around the city quite a bit and we loved this little artsy area with all of the cool food trucks!  Greenville is starting to get the food truck craze but nothing like in San Fran.

We rode the trolley all over too which we thought was so amazing during the day ... until we rode it at night... top 10 coolest experiences ever!  So beautiful with all of the elevation and lights!

Fisherman's Wharf had the most spectacular sunset and even better food!

The next day we were off to see the redwoods... You MUST visit Muir Woods if you ever have the chance!  It is gorgeous and so peaceful, the trees can't even be described, they are just amazing.

On our way home we were determined to find a nice calm area to relax and grab some ice cream, Salinas was the perfect spot, so tranquil!

So how many places can you see the Golden Gate Bridge from?  A LOT! You can drive, hike or boat to it as we found out.  It's soo captivating I couldn't stop taking pictures.

Our last night in San Fran we couldn't just leave the Bay Bridge ignored so we walked downtown to watch the light show, it did not disappoint!

Then started the drive down Coastal Highway 1.  I had heard this was great, but let me tell you, it was AWESOME.  We probably took 4 times as long to make the journey to Monterey because we couldn't help but keep pulling over to explore!

Seals and the Santa Monica Pier

After our first day in Monterey we kept going down Highway 1 in search of Big Sur and the amazing restaurant Nepenthe.  Imagine driving, not seeing a house, gas station or place to eat for 20 miles, then finding an amazing restaurant hanging off a cliff over the ocean.  Amazing!

The trip was amazing, just going through pictures again reminded me how good we are at going on vacation and see so much in such little time!  I can't wait to plan our next trip!  Leave some comments below if you've got good ideas for travel spots!
